LEGO® Therapy
Building Friendships, Communication and Confidence – One Brick at a Time!
At Penllergaer Primary School, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to develop confidence, build positive relationships and experience success in their learning. As part of our commitment to inclusion and supporting pupils with Additional Learning Needs (ALN), we use LEGO®-based Therapy to help children develop essential communication, social interaction and teamwork skills in a fun, engaging and supportive environment.
🌈 What is LEGO® Therapy?
LEGO®-based Therapy is a structured, play-based approach that uses LEGO® building activities to support children's social communication, cooperation and emotional development.
Through working together in small groups, children learn to listen to one another, share ideas, solve problems and develop positive relationships.
The beauty of LEGO® Therapy is that children are learning important life skills while enjoying an activity that is motivating, creative and rewarding.
🧱 How Does LEGO® Therapy Work?
During a typical session, children work together to complete a LEGO® model, with each learner taking on a different role:
🔴 The Engineer – Gives instructions and explains how the model should be built, developing communication and descriptive language skills.
🟡 The Supplier – Finds and provides the correct LEGO® pieces, developing listening, attention and organisational skills.
🟢 The Builder – Follows instructions to construct the model, developing concentration, cooperation and problem-solving skills.
Children are encouraged to swap roles, giving everyone opportunities to practise different skills and experience success.
Sessions are supported by a trained adult who encourages positive communication, cooperation and independent problem-solving.
💚 What Skills Does LEGO® Therapy Develop?
LEGO®-based Therapy can help children develop:
🤝 Friendship and Social Skills – Learning to work together, take turns, share and build positive relationships.
🗣️ Communication and Language – Developing speaking, listening, questioning and descriptive vocabulary.
🧠 Problem-Solving and Thinking Skills – Encouraging children to think creatively, follow instructions and overcome challenges.
💛 Confidence and Self-Esteem – Providing opportunities for children to experience success, celebrate achievements and feel proud of their contributions.
🌈 Emotional Regulation and Resilience – Supporting children to manage frustration, practise patience and develop strategies when things do not go to plan.
⭐ Teamwork and Cooperation – Understanding that everyone has an important role and that working together can help us achieve shared goals.
Why Is LEGO® Therapy Important at PPS?
At Penllergaer, we recognise that learning extends far beyond academic achievement. Developing children's confidence, communication, emotional wellbeing and ability to form positive relationships is equally important.
Our LEGO®-based Therapy provision reflects our commitment to providing inclusive, meaningful and engaging learning experiences that respond to the individual needs of our pupils.
It also supports the principles of the Curriculum for Wales, particularly the development of healthy, confident individuals and enterprising, creative contributors.
Through carefully planned, play-based activities, pupils have opportunities to develop skills that can be transferred into the classroom, playground and wider community.
LEGO®-based Therapy is just one of the ways we help ensure that every learner feels valued, supported and able to achieve their potential.
Our School Is for Everyone
At PPS, we understand that every child learns differently, and we are committed to creating an environment where all pupils can flourish.
By providing opportunities to develop friendships, practise communication and experience the joy of working together, we are helping our learners build the foundations for lifelong learning and positive relationships.
🧱 "Building more than models – building confidence, friendships and skills for life!"
