At Penllergaer Primary School, we believe that some of the most valuable learning experiences happen beyond the classroom. Our wonderful Caffi Pawb is a perfect example of this philosophy in action!

We are absolutely delighted that Caffi Pawb has once again opened its doors, welcoming parents, carers and members of our school community.

This year, we have an exciting ambition: every class across Penllergaer Primary School will have the opportunity to take responsibility for running our café, welcoming their families, taking orders, serving refreshments and discovering what it really means to run a business.

But Caffi Pawb is about so much more than making a cup of tea or serving a slice of cake. It is about developing confident, capable, independent young people who are ready to embrace the opportunities and challenges of the future.

Learning That Matters – Preparing Our Pupils for Life

At Penllergaer, academic achievement is extremely important to us. We have high expectations for every learner and are committed to ensuring that children make excellent progress in literacy, numeracy and across the curriculum.

However, we also recognise that every child is unique, with different strengths, talents, interests and aspirations.

Not every child will follow the same pathway in life, and we believe it is our responsibility to provide a rich range of experiences that allow every learner to discover their potential.

Caffi Pawb provides an excellent opportunity to bring the four purposes of the Curriculum for Wales to life.

Ambitious, capable learners

Pupils apply literacy and numeracy skills in meaningful situations, including reading menus, calculating prices, handling money, solving problems and communicating with customers.

Enterprising, creative contributors

Children develop entrepreneurial skills by organising their café, making decisions, promoting their services, working as a team and taking responsibility for delivering a positive customer experience.

Ethical, informed citizens

Pupils learn the importance of kindness, respect, fairness, inclusion and contributing positively to their community. They understand the value of providing a service to others.

Healthy, confident individuals

Through welcoming visitors, speaking to unfamiliar adults and taking on responsibilities, children develop independence, resilience, confidence and a sense of achievement.

Developing Skills for the Future

Our café provides meaningful opportunities for pupils to develop essential skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.

From customer service, teamwork and financial literacy to communication, leadership and problem-solving, Caffi Pawb allows pupils to experience the world of work in a safe, supportive and encouraging environment.

Importantly, children learn that running a successful business requires much more than simply selling a product. It requires organisation, commitment, cooperation, responsibility and pride in doing a job well.

These are skills that cannot always be developed through textbooks alone.

Our school motto, "Our School is for Everyone," is at the heart of everything we do.

Caffi Pawb reflects this commitment beautifully.

We recognise that some children demonstrate their strengths through academic work, while others flourish when given practical responsibilities, opportunities to communicate, or the chance to lead and support others.

For some pupils, confidently taking an order or welcoming a parent into the café may represent a significant personal achievement. For others, calculating change, organising a team or managing a task may provide an opportunity to extend their learning.

Every contribution matters, and every success deserves to be celebrated.

By providing experiences such as Caffi Pawb, we are creating an inclusive learning environment where children can develop their individual talents, discover new interests and experience success in different ways.

Strengthening Our School Community

Caffi Pawb also provides something equally important: opportunities to bring our school community together.

We love welcoming parents and carers into school and giving them the chance to see their children learning in a different environment.

There is something incredibly special about watching a child confidently welcome a customer, take an order or proudly serve a refreshment they have helped prepare.

These experiences help strengthen relationships between home and school while allowing families to celebrate the independence, confidence and developing skills of our learners.
