IDL Literacy Intervention

Building Literacy Skills, Developing Confidence and Unlocking Every Child's Potential

At Penllergaer Primary School, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to become a confident, capable and enthusiastic learner. We recognise that children develop literacy skills at different rates and that some learners benefit from additional support to strengthen their reading, spelling and writing.

As part of our commitment to inclusion and supporting pupils with Additional Learning Needs (ALN), we use IDL Literacy, a specialist computer-based intervention designed to support children who experience difficulties with literacy, including learners with dyslexia and other literacy-related needs.

Our aim is to remove barriers to learning, build confidence and provide every child with the skills they need to succeed.

🌈 What is IDL Literacy?

IDL (International Dyslexia Learning) Literacy is a structured, multisensory literacy intervention that uses technology to support the development of reading and spelling skills.

The programme combines visual, auditory and practical learning experiences, helping children make connections between sounds, letters, words and their meanings.

IDL is particularly supportive for learners who may find traditional approaches to reading and spelling challenging.

Through short, regular sessions, children work at their own pace, developing their literacy skills through carefully sequenced activities that build upon previous learning.

At PPS, we recognise that every child learns differently, and IDL provides another pathway to literacy success.

🧩 How Does IDL Work?

IDL Literacy provides a structured and personalised approach to learning.

Children complete activities on a computer or device, using a combination of listening, reading, typing and repetition to reinforce important literacy skills.

Our IDL provision focuses on:

🔤 Phonics and Sound Recognition – Strengthening children's understanding of the relationship between letters and sounds.

📖 Reading Development – Supporting word recognition, reading accuracy and fluency through carefully structured activities.

✏️ Spelling Skills – Helping children recognise spelling patterns, develop word knowledge and improve spelling accuracy.

👂 Listening and Auditory Processing – Providing opportunities to listen carefully to words and sentences and connect spoken language with written text.

⌨️ Multisensory Learning – Combining listening, seeing and typing to reinforce learning through different sensory pathways.

⭐ Independent Learning – Allowing children to work at an appropriate pace, revisit learning and experience success.

IDL activities are designed to be progressive, helping learners build confidence as they develop their skills.

🌟 What Are the Benefits of IDL Literacy?

Our IDL Literacy intervention aims to support children in developing:

💚 Reading Confidence – Helping children approach reading activities with greater confidence and independence.

📚 Reading Accuracy and Fluency – Developing the skills needed to recognise words and read more effectively.

✏️ Spelling and Writing Skills – Strengthening spelling knowledge and supporting greater confidence when completing written tasks.

🧠 Memory and Recall – Reinforcing learning through repetition and opportunities to revisit previously taught skills.

💻 Digital Learning Skills – Developing confidence in using technology purposefully to support learning.

🌈 Self-Esteem and Motivation – Providing opportunities for children to experience success and recognise their own progress.

🎯 Independence and Resilience – Encouraging children to persevere, practise and take greater ownership of their learning.

🏫 Why Is IDL Important at PPS?

At Penllergaer, we recognise that strong literacy skills provide the foundation for learning across the entire curriculum.

Reading, spelling and writing are essential skills that enable children to communicate, access information, express their ideas and participate confidently in learning.

However, we also understand that not every child develops these skills in the same way or at the same pace.

For some learners, literacy difficulties can create barriers that affect their confidence, independence and engagement in classroom activities.

Our IDL Literacy intervention provides an additional layer of targeted support, complementing the high-quality literacy teaching taking place in our classrooms.

Through regular practice and carefully structured activities, we aim to help children strengthen their literacy skills and develop greater confidence in their abilities.

📊 Monitoring Progress and Celebrating Success

At PPS, we believe that effective interventions should make a meaningful difference to children's learning.

We use assessment information, observations and ongoing monitoring to identify pupils who may benefit from additional literacy support.

IDL provides opportunities to track learners' engagement and progress over time, helping staff review the impact of the intervention and identify where further support may be needed.

We recognise that progress is individual. For one child, success may mean recognising previously unfamiliar words. For another, it may mean improved spelling accuracy, increased reading confidence or greater independence when completing classroom tasks.

Every step forward matters, and every achievement deserves recognition.

📚 Supporting Our School Improvement Priorities

Developing strong literacy skills is a key priority at Penllergaer Primary School.

Our whole-school approach focuses on raising standards in reading through a coherent and consistent approach to early literacy development and promoting a positive reading culture.

IDL Literacy contributes to this priority by providing targeted support for learners who require additional opportunities to consolidate and develop essential literacy skills.

The intervention also supports the principles of the Curriculum for Wales, particularly the development of ambitious, capable learners who can communicate effectively, apply their skills and become increasingly independent.

By combining high-quality classroom teaching with carefully selected interventions, we aim to ensure that all learners have opportunities to make progress.

💚 Our School Is for Everyone

At PPS, inclusion is at the heart of everything we do.

We understand that literacy difficulties should never prevent a child from feeling successful, valued or capable.

Our IDL Literacy provision is one of the ways we respond to individual learning needs, provide additional support and help remove barriers to achievement.

Alongside our wider ALN provision, including ELSA, Sensory Circuits, LEGO®-based Therapy, Positive Play and support for children with DCD, IDL reflects our commitment to ensuring that every child receives the encouragement and opportunities they need to flourish.

By investing in literacy development, confidence and independence, we are helping our learners build essential skills that will support them throughout their education and beyond.

🌈 "Every word learned, every skill developed, every step forward – building confident readers and brighter futures."
